Description
"A gentle white-tail doe ... bedded down on the little tree..." crushing it. The story of an oak, from acorn to ancient tree, pulls together threads of time, nature, and history. Although crooked, the tree shelters living things — Native Americans, settlers, bear, deer, bobcats. Book contains vibrant oil paintings of Shawnee, Delaware, and Sioux.

Author's Comments
When folks visit my home at the edge of a wood, they are apt to ask, "Where is the crooked tree? Is that it, down there?" I say, "Yes." It is nothing but a bumpy snag with a few leaves growing on it. My guests and readers are fascinated to think that a tree still lives after two or three hundred years.
